The National Weather Service in Sterling Virginia has issued a

* Severe Thunderstorm Warning for... West central Augusta County in western Virginia... Southern Highland County in western Virginia...

* Until 600 PM EDT.

* At 510 PM EDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from near Burnsville to 11 miles northeast of Bells Valley, moving east at 25 mph.

HAZARD...60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail.

SOURCE...Radar indicated.

IMPACT...Damaging winds will cause some trees and large branches to fall. This could injure those outdoors, as well as damage homes and vehicles. Roadways may become blocked by downed trees. Localized power outages are possible. Unsecured light objects may become projectiles.

* Locations impacted include... Augusta Springs, Churchville, Deerfield, West Augusta, Williamsville, Buffalo Gap, Clover Creek, Trimbles Mill, Bolar, Christian, Swoope, and Liberty.

What to Do

For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building.
Large hail, damaging wind, and continuous cloud to ground lightning are occurring with these storms. Move indoors immediately. Lightning is one of nature's leading killers. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning.
Torrential rainfall is occurring with these storms, and may lead to flash flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.

Severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds and large hail are possible through this evening across portions of eastern West Virginia, northern and central Virginia, central and southern Maryland, and the District of Columbia.

Residents in these areas should monitor this situation very closely and ensure your NOAA weather radios are set to alert mode. Severe weather warnings for imminent damaging storms may become necessary.
