In effect from Saturday 10/31 4:54 AM GMT+10 – Saturday 10/31 4:00 PM GMT+10
Issued by NWS Tiyan GU
What
Large breaking waves of 9 to 12 feet and dangerous rip currents expected.
Where
West and north facing reefs of Guam, Rota, Tinian and Saipan.
When
Until 4 PM ChST this afternoon.
Impacts
Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water.
Additional Details
As TY In-fa moves away from the far northern CNMI, the large, long-period northwest to north swell emanating from In-fa will maintain hazardous surf along north and west facing reefs. Seas have begun to slowly subside and have gradually turned northwest, ending hazardous surf along east facing reefs and beginning hazardous surf along west facing reefs. Surf will remain hazardous through this afternoon. These surf conditions will maintain a high risk of dangerous rip currents. Although surf is now below hazardous levels along east facing reefs, the rip current risk will remain high.
What to Do
Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions.
Rip currents will be life threatening. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don't swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
Areas Impacted
- Guam
- Rota
- Tinian
- Saipan
Tips to Stay Safe
A High Surf Advisory means that breaking waves could result in dangerous conditions.
- Very strong waves could be dangerous to anyone in the water and along the shore.
- Always stay near lifeguards.
- Stay off of rocks or jetties where large waves could pop up suddenly.
