* Flash Flood Warning for... Logan County in central Illinois... Southeastern Mason County in central Illinois... Menard County in central Illinois... Northern Sangamon County in central Illinois... Southeastern Tazewell County in central Illinois... Cass County in west central Illinois... Morgan County in west central Illinois... Scott County in west central Illinois...

* Until 1100 PM CDT.

* At 701 PM CDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Up to 2 inches of rain have fallen. Additional rainfall amounts up to 2 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.

HAZARD...Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms.

IMPACT...Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas.

* Some locations that will experience flash flooding include... Springfield, Jacksonville, Lincoln, Mason City, Petersburg, Athens, Virginia, Winchester, Alexander, Sherman, Riverton, South Jacksonville, Mackinaw, Delavan, Mount Pulaski, Williamsville, New Berlin, Ashland, Minier and Meredosia.

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

  • If you are in a low-lying or flood prone area, move to higher ground immediately.  
  • Stay off bridges over fast-moving water, and away from storm drains, culverts, creeks and streams. 
  • Never walk, swim, or drive through flood waters or flooded roads. 
  • If you are trapped in a building, move to the highest floor and call 911. Go to the roof only if necessary. 
  • If your vehicle is trapped in rapidly moving water, stay inside. If water is rising inside the vehicle, move to the roof and signal for help.

Tornado Watch In Effect

A Tornado Watch is in effect until 9 PM tonight. Look for a thunderstorm activity to increase across west-central Illinois late this afternoon. Storms are expected to develop into a line of storms by early evening west of the Illinois River and push east/southeast through the evening hours. Several tornadoes are possible today in addition to large hail, damaging winds, and localized flooding. Stay weather aware!
