Impacts

Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water.

What to do

Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don't swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.

Tips to stay safe

Rip currents may create dangerous swimming conditions in the area.  

  • If you enter the water, always have a flotation device with you and swim near a lifeguard. 
  • Keep small children in sight and within arm’s reach at all times. 
  • If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don’t swim against the current. If able, swim parallel to the shoreline.
