Flooding caused by an ice jam is expected.

the Anchor River near Anchor Point Road downstream of the Sterling Highway And The Anchor River State Recreation Area.

Impacts

Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Water over roadways is possible.

Additional Details

- At 855 AM AKDT, river gauge reports indicate rises in water levels from an ice jam on the Anchor River near Anchor Point Road downstream of the Sterling Highway and the Anchor River State Recreation Area. Impounding water due to the ice jam will cause rapid river rises upstream.

- For Anchor River at Old Sterling Highway: At 5:26am the stage was 15.8 feet. Flood Stage is 15.5 feet.

Impacts: - At 15.5 feet: Water starts to flood Anchor Point State Recreation area and Campground downstream of the New Sterling Highway Bridge. - At 16.0 feet: Anchor Point Road near the Old Sterling Highway Floods with 6-8 inches of water. Campground near the Old Sterling Highway floods with water up to 1 foot deep. - http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood

Breaking waves of 4 to 8 feet. Southwest winds up to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph.

Where

Kachemak Bay, including the south side of Homer Spit.

When

2 PM Sunday through 8 AM Monday

Impacts

Water and light debris (such as small rocks) may wash over portions of the Homer Spit Road. Minor beach erosion is possible.

Additional Details

The worst conditions are expected late Sunday afternoon or evening as southwesterly winds quickly increase in conjunction with or just after the 3:55 PM AKDT high tide. South to southwest winds and rough seas are expected to persist into Monday morning through the following high tide at 3:44 AM AKDT before conditions slowly improve as the tide goes back out.

A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in the advisory area, producing rip currents and localized beach erosion.

  • Very strong waves could be dangerous to anyone in the water and along the shore. 
  • Always stay near lifeguards.
  • Stay off of rocks or jetties where large waves could pop up suddenly.

A Flood Advisory is in effect until 9 AM Monday for flooding due to ice jams along the Anchor River, downstream of the Sterling Highway and the Anchor River State Recreation Area. Impounding water due to ice jams will cause rapid river rises upstream. Use caution in the vicinity of the Anchor River. At 5:36am, the stage was 15.8 feet. Flood stage is at 15.5 feet. At 16.0 feet, Anchor Pt. Rd. near Old Sterling Hwy floods, 6-8 inches of water. Campground near Old Sterling Hwy floods with water up to a foot deep. #akwx
